SpaceLab student wins award for best proposal by an individual in ESA competition
SpaceLab masters student Mónica Estebanez Camarena was recently applauded for her submission to ESA's Sentinel Smallsat S3 Challenge. Monica's proposal, named PyrSat, was judged as the best submission by an individual. The proposal envisaged a 3U cubesat for fire monitoring. Many fire monitoring applications have been proposed. The novel elements of this one are the full use of cheap, commercially available off-the-shelf components for a hyperspectral imager and the use of open source tools and readily available single-board computing platforms to enable the satellite to conduct autonomous classifications of fires and burn scars, thus minimizing requirements for the ground infrastructure to utilize the satellite.
